20-YO Canadian Woman Allegedly Raped In Delhi. This Is When Govt Said India Is Safe For Women.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi and National Commission for Women (NCW) might be busy discrediting the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey which ranked India the most dangerous country in the world for women, but they might have got a tough time defending their position after yet another rape case was reported in Delhi, this time involving a Canadian woman.

A 20-year-old Canadian national who was visiting India with three of her friends has alleged that she was raped by a man who she had befriended in a Hauz Khas pub.

The accused, identified as Abhishek, who worked as the manager of a guest house in East Delhi has been arrested.

According to the police, the woman went to Abhishek's place on his invitation where he assaulted her.

She managed to escape and informed the police after reaching AIIMS and later gave a written complaint.

Thomson Reuters Foundation in its report had cited government data which shows that reported cases of crime against women in India rose by 83 per cent between 2007 and 2016, when there were four cases of rape reported every hour.

Thomson Reuters Foundation in its report had cited government data which shows that reported cases of crime against women in India rose by 83 per cent between 2007 and 2016, when there were four cases of rape reported every hour.

The government, however, questioned the sample size used in the survey and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi had written to TRF demanding answers as to why was the ministry not consulted for the report. She has also written asking details of the methodology used to get the official numbers, the sample size used and information as to who were the stakeholder.

National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma had also rejected the survey report, claiming that the sample size was small and could not be representative of the whole country.

"The Commission rejects the survey in question. For a nation as big as India, with a population of approximately 1.3 billion, the sample size of the survey is not representative of the country as a whole," she said.

"Women are very aware in India of issues and there is no way that we could be ranked number one in such a survey. The countries that have been ranked after India have women who are not even allowed to speak in public," Sharma said.

Anti-inflammatory effects of compounds from Kaempferia parviflora and Boesenbergia pandurata

Kaempferia parviflora and Boesenbergia pandurata are perennial herbs in the Zingiberaceae family. The rhizomes of these two plants have been used as food ingredients and in Thai traditional medicine for treatment of several inflammatory-related diseases, such as gout, allergy, apthous ulcer and peptic ulcer. The compounds isolated from the rhizomes of K. parviflora and B. pandurata were, therefore, examined for their inhibitory activities against nitric oxide (NO) production. For K. parviflora, compound 5 (5-hydroxy-3,7,3',4'-tetramethoxyflavone) exhibited the highest activity against the NO inhibitory effect, with an IC50 value of 16.1 µM, followed by 4 (IC50 = 24.5 µM) and 3 (IC50 = 30.6 µM). Regarding the NO inhibitory activity of B. pandurata, compound 2 (panduratin A) displayed the most potent effect with an IC50 value of 5.3 µM, followed by 3 (hydroxypanduratin A, IC50 = 13.3 µM) and 7 (cardamonin, IC50 = 24.7 µM), respectively. The 5-hydroxy-3,7,3',4'-tetramethoxyflavone (5), panduratin A (2) and hydroxypanduratin A (3), were also tested on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) production. 5-Hydroxy-3,7,3',4'-tetramethoxyflavone (5) exhibited a potent inhibitory effect on PGE2 production (IC50 = 16.3 µM), but a mild effect on TNF-a (IC50 > 100 µM). Panduratin A and hydroxypanduratin A showed strong activity against PGE2 with IC50 values of 10.5 and 12.3 µM, respectively, and a moderate effect on TNF-a (IC50 = 60.3 and 57.3 µM, respectively). This study indicated that compound 5 (5-hydroxy-3,7,3',4'-tetramethoxyflavone) is responsible for anti-inflammatory activity of K. parviflora, while 2 (panduratin A) and 3 (hydroxypanduratin A), the prenylated chalcones, are responsible for that of B. pandurata.

The present study, therefore, supports the traditional use of K. parviflora and B. pandurata rhizomes for treatment of inflammatory-related diseases through the inhibition of NO, PGE2 and TNF-a release.
